New calls everyday now
February 27, 2025As February winds up and we prepare to enter March, the number of different songbird calls we are hearing now as birds stake their territories and advertise for a suitable mate let’s us know nesting behavior and egg laying is right around the corner. The woodpeckers use their song and calls as well as their drumming on trees. Each species of woodpecker has its own distinct drum or tapping sound that is known by its own kind.
All this points to warmer temperatures fast on the way.
The latest song or call I’ve noticed here was a Saw Whet Owl.
Last night hearing its too, too, too, too call was exciting and reminder of what’s going on in their world. It made sense where I first heard it was over a large bog swamp area near my house. Saw Whets are tiny Owls weighing just three to four ounces and standing only seven or eight inch’s high. They are known to favor bog areas or wetlands.
Calling away for at least ten minutes, it then stopped only to start a series of calls again now on the other side of our main road, behind houses in another swampy area, roughly 500 yards or more distant from the first spot. This behavior made me think t was advertising for a mate but CT. does have this species migrate through as well so it’s possible it was a migratory bird. Going by the time of year and behavior I’m guessing this was likely a resident bird. It It was neat to hear it, regardless.
