Red-breasted Merganser

Taking flight. Mergansers run on the water and use their wings as they take off. It can be hard to see them with just your eyes as the sun is setting but the camera freezes the feet.

Bufflehead male

Another duck that winters in CT. as well as most of the US. A cavity nester, it specializes in using holes left from Northern Flicker woodpeckers to nest, in the Canadian North woods.

The oldest known Bufflehead record was 18 years and 8 months old when it was caught and released in NY in 1993.

Red-breasted Breed around May / June in the boreal forest on fresh and salt water. We love that they are here in the US and Mexico all winter. Diving to catch and eat 15-20 fish in the 4"-6" size range a day, they have a fine sawtooth edge on the inside of their thin bill which allows them to hold on to those slippery meals.

Shes just beautiful. The blue in the water accentuates the blue tones in her bill. Seen here during a snow storm in a tidal marsh right off Long Island sound in Connecticut. Scaup breed in the prairie region of the US as well as the boreal forest and tundra of Canada and the far north.

She caught this crab and showed they do eat things other than fish at times.

Common Loon Adult

The sound of the Maine woods.

Loons can stay underwater 5 minutes and can fly up to 70 miles per hour. When they dive they can surface a long way from where they were. Its easy to loose site of them.

This guy surfaced near my canoe. He seemed to not mind the attention at all, almost like he was as curious about me as I was of him.

Mute Swan - Connecticut winter

Not native to North America having been introduced from Europe but now having established breeding populations. Disliked by some for their aggressiveness towards humans especially during nesting season. Also they can eat large amounts of underwater vegetation needed by other ducks and fish. The positive side is they are absolutely beautiful. Ive spent hours studying them and find them to be graceful and fun to watch. They mate for life. About 12 to 31 lbs.
