Beaver cutting trees to get the branches, which they then take and stick into the mud underwater, near their lodge. When the ice freezes the pond or lake over, they have a source of food to get them through the next few months. This is why they dam bodies of water, to get access to more trees via a rising water level. 

This Beaver not only cut through most of the tree but started on a the decking of small boardwalk section of this swamp.

  They are taking advantage of the open water to get as many branches underwater as possible before the ice comes.
